What this course is about
This course deals with communication of science beyond traditional, written, scholarly publication.
This course focuses on personal, team and grupal communication, even though corporate/institutional.
Communicating Scince is an attitude. Everyone can communicate, if relevant skills are provided.
What this course is not about
This is not (just) a public communication and dissertation course
This is not either a course on how to produce video and/or audio
This course will not likely provide a list of tools to become fluent in the Web 2.0 Space.
This course is not about marketing
This course focuses on content generation and dissemination
Project management should be the subject of another course. Project planning, mind mapping, etc.. too. But personal skills ok.
About the required skills of students
Students are expected to know the basics about Internet tools to study, communicate, collaborate and share. In particular:
Sharing files (dropbox, google drive, etc.)
Presentations: at least Powerpoint, Prezi or similar software
Participants in this course should have basic skills regarding Social Networking. Among them, they should
Have a twitter account
Have a facebook account
Understand the basics of blogging
Be used to photography and video social networking sites like flickr or youtube
Likewise, students should have a fair knowledge of how to take a pictura and to shoot video, especially throuth smartphones
After the course, students should have opened or continued to
Have a linkedin account and activity
Maintain a blog
Share information in the Internet: Slideshare, issuu, flickr, youtube, other Social Networks.
Know about Scientific Social Networks beyond professional ones (linkedin): Academia.edu, ResearchGate, Orchid, etc.
Know their metrics, reputation, etc.
Have got relevant personal productivity tools like mind mapping procedures.
Communicating Science is a two-way process. Thus, everyone should be used to keep a conversation going in Social Networks.
And indeed, having an e-mail account and actually using it is required.
What students should bring to classroom and what will documentation be provided
Classes are being held every day along a whole week, two hours starting at 10 am. This course involves dynamic use of Internet tools. Thus, laptops, tablets and even smartphones are welcome in class to practise on science communication 2.0.
Note: If you cannot bring your own device, please let me know so the Library may borrow a laptop for you. Indeed you can take notes using an electronic device or follow a more traditional, paper-based procedure.
I will do my best to share course materials in the Internet. No photocopies are likely to be provided.
About the expected attitude of registered students
It's crucial that we are not simply observers of communication practice - we must be practitioners too, exploring new methods for communicating science. We must query best practice. We must be as inventive as…well…scientists. And, in the process, we expect you to come up with some marvelous new ways of engaging people with science. It could be a website, a neon display, an interactive game, a Second Life, a fourth dimension: we have the technology, and the possibilities are only limited by your imagination - which is what this course aims to set free.
